The Future of Urban Cemeteries as Public Spaces: Insights from Oslo and Copenhagen

Public spaces are believed to make cities more liveable, healthy and socially equal. To date, discussions about public have primarily revolved around emblematic types, such as squares parks, while little attention has been paid cemeteries. Drawing on a review of space scholarship cemetery research, an analysis strategies for development in two Scandinavian capitals, Oslo Copenhagen, interviews with stakeholders, this paper elaborates the special type space. Our findings demonstrate potential cemeteries’ contribution urban environment multifunctional – trajectory envisioned by municipalities.
